Is Baby Oil Actually Good for the Skin?

Oils have gained quite a bit of attention over the past few years due to their tremendous benefits for the skin and their ability to hydrate & cleanse. However, some oils are better than others, case in point? Baby Oil.

Babies have beautiful soft skin so why wouldn’t you want the same? Many people believe that baby skincare products are the answer, but really babies skin is so soft and healthy because it hasn’t been exposed to as much pollution and sun damage.

Baby oil is not the answer for soft, healthy skin.

Baby Oil is 100% mineral oil (or in some cases mineral oil and fragrance) We are generally told that mineral = good (thanks to the mineral makeup craze) but mineral oil can do more harm than good. Mineral oil is derived from petroleum it’s “a distillation product of petroleum” to be exact and it’s not good for the skin. Mineral oil doesn’t actually contain any benefits and doesn’t give any hydration to the skin, instead, much like petroleum jelly it “locks in” moisture and “provides a barrier” over the skin. It does give the sensation of smooth, hydrated skin but only temporarily. It doesn’t actually give the skin any nourishment. Not to mention mineral oil is also a photo-sensitive ingredient which can cause the skin to become more sensitive to the sun.

If you want to use a baby oil or any skin oil for that matter opt for a natural or organic variation that is mineral oil free or reach into your kitchen cupboard and pull out some Olive, Argan or Coconut Oil.
