How to Choose the Right Hair Colour

Two Methods:Initial StepsDetermining The Right Hair Colour For You

If you want to change your appearance, the easiest way to do it is to do something to your hair. Choosing the right hair colour isn’t as easy as simply picking out a color you like. There are a lot of factors that you should consider before picking a color for your hair.

Below are some steps that you can follow to make sure you are choosing the right hair colour.

Method 1 of 2: Initial Steps

  1. Choose the Right Hair Colour Step 1 Version 2.jpg Observe what type of skin tone you have.If you can see your veins at your wrists, check what color they are-- if they are blue your undertone is cool, if they are green your undertone is warm, and if they are somewhere in between, your undertone is neutral. If you cannot see them, try taking a good-quality photo of your face outside on a bright overcast day with no makeup on, then eyedropping the colour with image editing software to see whether it is a cooler or warmer shade.
    • If you have olive skin you suit darker hair colours. You should never go lighter than your skin because it appears fake.
    • If you have pink skin, avoid shades of warm red or golden blonde. Stick to ash tones to neutralize your coloring.
    • Pale skin suits nearly any hair colour, though this does not necessarily mean it will be flattering.
    • Bright, striking colours particularly flatter dark skin tones, but softer shades can potentially make you look washed-out.
    • If you are extremely pale then don't go for black or very dark hair because it makes you look even more pale then you already are (unless that's the effect you're after!). Dark hair can also be ageing on very pale skin.
    • If you have yellow hues to your skin be careful with yellow, gold or orange tones. Deep reds and dark browns are often safer.
  2. Choose the Right Hair Colour Step 2 Version 2.jpg Determine what clothing colour suits you best. This will be directly related to the hair color you should select.
    • If you look good in red, orange, golden yellow, olive green or rust, you suit warm hair tones such as golden blonde, golden brown, strawberry blonde and auburn.
    • If you look good in bluish red, fuchsia, black, royal blue or pine green, you suit cool hair tones such as platinum, ash blonde, ash brown, burgundy and jet black.
    • If you look good in red, purple, charcoal grey, periwinkle or teal, you suit neutral tones like sandy blonde, beige blonde, chocolate brown and mahogany.
  3. Choose the Right Hair Colour Step 3 Version 2.jpg Determine what type of jewelry looks best on you. This will determine whether you are cool, neutral or warm.
    • If you suit silver jewellery better you have cool skin.
    • If you suit gold jewellery better you have warm skin.
    • Suiting either means you are neutral.
  4. Choose the Right Hair Colour Step 4 Version 2.jpg Determine your eye color.Eye hair color and hair color go hand in hand.
    • A hair color with warm tones like red, gold and auburn shades are best for people with brown, green or hazel eyes. This is because these particular eye colors also have a yellow base.
    • Hair colors like light gold or ash are cooler-toned colors and are best suited to people with blue or grey eyes. These eye colors have a blue base as opposed to having a yellow or brown base.

Method 2 of 2: Determining The Right Hair Colour For You

  1. Choose the Right Hair Colour Step 5 Version 2.jpg Brown.Consider dyeing your hair brown if you meet most of the following criteria:
    • Your hair is mousy brown now. This would be a minor change then that is just deepening your current hair color.
    • You want a low-maintenance color. The upkeep for brown is minimal and the kits for brown hair color that can be bought over the counter are almost impossible to mess up.
    • Your hair is damaged. Browns reflect well in light and minimizes breakages and tresses.
  2. Choose the Right Hair Colour Step 6 Version 2.jpg Red.Red is a versatile colour and there's usually a shade to suit anyone, but consider going with a red if you meet most of the following criteria.
    • Pink skin. Women with cool or pink skin pull off a darker cold red or purple-red well.
    • Golden and olive skin looks best with a dark natural auburn or dark red-brown.
    • Very pale skin. Anything from a bright unnatural red to a natural ginger can be flattering, but be sure to match the shade to your undertone.
    • Medium to dark skin. A bright fire-engine or postbox red can look very striking on darker skin. Once again, be sure to match the shade to your undertone.
    • Your hair is in good condition. If your hair is dry or damaged, it will have a hard time holding on to red color molecules and the colour will fade quickly.
  3. Choose the Right Hair Colour Step 7 Version 2.jpg Blond.Consider going blond if you meet the criteria below.
    • You were blond as a child. Warmer skin tones suit a golden blonde better, and cool skin tones suit cold ashy tones best. If your undertone is neutral, you can potentially get away with any shade but use your best discretion as to which shade will be most flattering.
    • You can afford regular maintenance. This is an expensive color to maintain. You will need regular root touch-ups and toning products to make the color last longer without turning brassy.
  4. Choose the Right Hair Colour Step 8 Version 2.jpg Black.Consider going black if you meet the following criteria.
    • You have darker skin. Black or olive skin works best with this color.
    • You are absolutely certain you want black. This is the hardest color to lift. Once you get it, it's almost impossible to dye it back to your old color without damaging your hair.
  5. Choose the Right Hair Colour Step 9.jpg Silver or white.Silver and white are very daring colours but can look stunning if you meet the following criteria:
    • You have very pale skin with cool undertones. Silver with ashy blonde tones will neutralise the pink tones in your skin. Avoid white, which will accentuate your pinkness.
    • You have very dark cool-toned skin. The contrast between white hair and dark skin is visually stunning, especially if finished with a bold hairstyle.
    • You are prepared to put a lot of maintenance into your hair. Unnatural silver and white require the most upkeep of any hair colour as not only do they require very regular toning and root touch-ups, but in order to achieve such a light colour you will have to use a strong dye which will unavoidably damage your hair. This means that you will also have to be very careful with your hair, especially if it is curly. In addition to this, you will have to wash your hair very regularly as silver and white show up grease as a pale yellow colour-- and washing it will fade your toner further.
    • You have hair in very good condition, or you are prepared to have short hair. Unnatural silver and white hair will be more damaged than any other colour as the colour is taken out of the hair strands without being replaced, making it potentially brittle and dry. It is always best to go to a hairdresser to have hair bleached this light unless you are very experienced with dyeing your own hair.
