I was with my friend at the mall the other day and she needed a little assistance buying under eye concealer. I showed her three of my favorites and thought it could be helpful to round up the concealers I’ve tried (both great and not so great) here on the blog!
Concealer is such a personal thing that really requires a few tries before you can determine what you think about it. Find a store with a good return policy, or spend some time with an employee who can show you how to apply it, in order to ensure you can give it a decent shot.
The majority of my concealing needs is for under my eyes, but occasionally I’ll need to conceal blemishes as well.
So, let’s run through the concealers I showed above!
1. Make Up For Ever Full Cover Concealer (I wear shade Light Beige) : All time favorite concealer. If I’m ever in doubt, this is the concealer I grab. My under eye circles disappear, and it even covers blemishes well too. It’s thick and heavy (hence it’s effectiveness) so if you prefer a really natural look you may not enjoy how heavy this concealer is.
2. Laura Mercier High Coverage Concealer for Under Eye (I wear shade 0.5): I’ve been using this concealer for a few weeks and am pleasantly surprised. It’s hard to squeeze out of the tube, but you only need a tiny amount so perhaps that’s “their” way of controlling how much you use. It too is thick, and takes a little bit longer to rub in because it’s slightly more clay-like than the Make Up For Ever Full Cover Concealer, but equally as effective at covering dark circles.
3. L’Oreal Visible Lift Serum Absolute Concealer (I wear light): I only used this for under eyes and I liked it. It’s a bit more of a natural finish than #1 & #2, but the brightening effect is nice for under the eyes. It’s good, not amazing.
4. Marc Jacobs Re(Marc)able Full Cover Concealer (I wear Alive 02): Nothing against Marc Jacob’s but I have yet to try a product of his that I need to keep in my makeup bag. They are good, sure, but none have blown me away. This concealer was a quick return because I felt like it did nothing!
5. Nars Creamy Concealer (I wear shade Vanilla): This is my go-to for blemish concealing. The creamy part ensures that it’s flexible and blend able, and the coverage is really good. For under eye’s it’s great for a natural finish. It won’t hide every single thing, but it will make you look more awake and well rested.
6.Sonia Kashuk All Covered Up Concealer (I wear Ivory): This concealer is great for covering under eye darkness, but is a little bit prone to creasing. It takes practice to learn how to blend it in well and determine how much you actually need to use, but it’s a good budget concealer.
7. Mac ‘Pro Longwear’ Concealer (I wear shade NW 20): It’s been a few years since I used this concealer on the regular, but I remember loving it. It’s no fuss, covers blemishes and dark circles, and it doesn’t crease one bit. I remember it drying quickly, so make sure you work fast on blending before it settles in.
8. BareMinerals Correcting Concealer (I wear Light 01): I wasn’t impressed with this concealer at all. I wanted to like it but I found that it didn’t cover any under eye darkness, and was much too sheer.
Overall, you can see that I tend to go for the high end concealers. When it comes to anything I apply directly to my face, I’ve had much more success than with drugstore products. This isn’t to say that there are no great drugstore concealers, I just have yet to find one that really blows me away.
To boil it all down, if you need high coverage concealer : go for Make Up For Ever Full Cover. If you want a natural finish: try the Nars Creamy Concealer.
